The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed retired General Christopher Musa as the new Minister of Defence after a rigorous five-hour screening on Wednesday.

General Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), faced tough questions from lawmakers on Nigeria’s worsening security situation, recent troop withdrawals, and rising attacks on military officers across the country.

Senators Query Troop Withdrawal Before Kebbi School Abduction

One of the major issues raised was the controversial withdrawal of troops from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State—just days before the abduction of several schoolgirls on November 17.

Responding, Musa assured Nigerians that a full-scale investigation would be launched immediately.

“We cannot allow such lapses to continue. A full investigation will be carried out,” he told lawmakers.

General Musa Vows Justice for Slain Brigadier General Musa Uba

The Defence Minister–designate also addressed the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba in Borno State.

He vowed that those responsible would be hunted down.

“It is painful and unacceptable. We will not allow terrorists to have the capacity to do such. We are going after them fully.”

He noted that coordinated operations involving all security agencies would be strengthened.

Identifies Gaps, Calls for Stronger Funding and Community Cooperation

General Musa highlighted critical gaps within the armed forces, stressing the need for:

  • Better funding
  • Improved community-based intelligence
  • Stronger inter-agency collaboration
  • Full implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative

He emphasized a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, banditry and mass abductions.

Screening Row Erupts Over “Bow and Go” Suggestion

The session became tense when Senator Sani Musa proposed that the nominee should simply “take a bow and go.”

Lawmakers, including Senator Garba Maidoki, rejected the idea, insisting on a full screening.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio intervened, stating:

“Nigerians and the international community are watching. We must do due diligence.”

Musa Pledges Nationwide Security Strengthening

General Musa’s nomination came after former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru resigned on health grounds.

In his closing remarks, Musa pledged total commitment to rebuilding Nigeria’s security system.

“I pledge to do my best to ensure Nigeria is secure. We need the support of every Nigerian. The enemies we are dealing with are evil forces with no respect for human life.”

A Critical Appointment Amid Rising Security Challenges

General Musa’s confirmation comes at a time of heightened insecurity, including kidnappings, banditry, insurgency, and mass school abductions nationwide.

His appointment is widely seen as a strategic move by President Bola Tinubu to strengthen defence leadership and restore public confidence.
