Nigeria’s headline inflation rate recorded a slight decline in January 2026, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday.

The NBS report shows that inflation eased to 15.10% in January 2026, down marginally from 15.15% recorded in December 2025.

CPI Falls to 127.4

In the same report, the statistics agency disclosed that Nigeria’s CPI dropped to 127.4 in January 2026, representing a 3.8-point decline compared to 131.2 in the previous month.

The NBS explained that the drop indicates a slowdown in the rate at which average prices increased across the country.

Food Inflation Also Declines

The NBS also noted that food inflation reduced in January, dropping to 8.89%, compared to 10.84% in December 2025.

This suggests that food prices, while still high, rose at a slower pace than they did in the previous month.

Month-on-Month Inflation Turns Negative

Another key highlight from the report was the month-on-month inflation figure.

According to NBS, headline inflation on a month-on-month basis stood at -2.88% in January 2026, which is 3.42% lower than the 0.54% recorded in December 2025.

This means the pace of price increases reduced significantly compared to the previous month.

Nigerians Still Complain About Cost of Living

Despite the slight drop in inflation, many Nigerians have continued to complain about the rising cost of living, with household expenses, food items, and transportation still putting pressure on families nationwide.

It will be closely watched in the coming months whether the disinflation trend will continue or reverse again.
