Nigerian troops under the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have successfully repelled an attack by suspected ISWAP fighters and launched a counter-offensive that led to the killing of 16 terrorists in Borno State.

The development was confirmed in a statement on Wednesday by the Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba.

ISWAP Attack on Auno Base

According to the statement, the insurgents attacked the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Auno on February 5, 2026, shortly before midnight.

However, troops of Sector 1 reportedly repelled the assault.

Counter-Offensive Leaves 16 Terrorists Dead

Following the failed attack, troops, alongside members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), carried out a counter-offensive on February 9 along the Komala axis in Konduga LGA.

The military said the terrorists were pursued to the Gidan Kaji axis, where 16 insurgents were neutralised, while others escaped with injuries.

Weapons, Bicycles Recovered

The troops also recovered several logistics items during the operation, including:

  • Over 20 bicycles
  • Weapons
  • Other suspected insurgent supplies

Suspected Drug Suppliers Arrested

The statement further revealed that suspected ISWAP logistics suppliers were arrested the same day around the Bukarti axis, while allegedly transporting a large quantity of drugs meant for the terrorists.

Kidnap Attempts Foiled, Victims Rescued

In another operation, troops reportedly foiled a kidnap attempt along the Buratai–Kamuya road on February 9.

The suspects fled into the bushes, abandoning their victims.

Two victims — Mallam Idris Adamu and Mallam Muhammadu Safiyanu — were rescued and reunited with their families in Buratai.

Troops also responded to another distress call along the Chibok–Damboa axis, rescuing nine additional kidnapped victims.
