The Edo State Government has confirmed that no fewer than 25 people were affected by the fuel tanker explosion that occurred on December 17, 2025, in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.

The disclosure was made by Edo State Emergency Management Agency, during a state government visit to the affected community.

Victims Receiving Treatment

According to Jerry Idahosa, Head of EDOSEMA, 16 of the affected persons are currently receiving medical care at Auchi General Hospital and Amazing Grace Hospital.

He also confirmed that the explosion led to the destruction of several shops, four trucks, and multiple motorcycles in the area.

Government Delegation Visits Scene

A state government delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Gani Audu, visited Auchi to sympathise with the victims and conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the incident.

Audu explained that the visit was carried out on the direct instruction of the governor to express solidarity with the affected community and obtain first-hand information on the cause and impact of the explosion.

He added that the delegation toured the scene of the inferno as well as hospitals where victims are being treated, noting that a comprehensive report would be submitted to the governor to guide long-term preventive measures.

While expressing gratitude that no life was lost, Audu said the findings from the visit would help the government implement strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Road Condition Blamed

Also speaking during the visit, the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Festus Ebea, attributed the incident partly to the poor condition of the Auchi–Okene expressway, particularly around the Jattu junction.

He described the road as dangerous due to its undulating nature, noting that several trailers have previously been involved in accidents along the route. He called for urgent remedial work to reduce future risks.

Government Assumes Responsibility, Issues Warning

Ebea assured residents that the Edo State Government would take responsibility for the medical treatment of those injured in the explosion.

He also warned members of the public against attempting to scoop fuel from fallen tankers, stressing that Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) is highly flammable.

“Anytime you see fuel spilling, move away immediately. Even a minor static spark can trigger a fire,” he cautioned.

The incident remains under review as the state government considers both immediate support for victims and long-term safety measures to prevent a recurrence.
