President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reversed the controversial promotion of his Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, to the rank of Brigadier General, following strong objections within the Nigerian Army over procedure, morale, and adherence to promotion standards.

The decision reportedly came after days of internal discontent and high-level consultations involving senior military authorities and the Presidency.

Army Officers Kick Against Special Promotion

The special promotion had sparked anger among officers, particularly those who had completed required military courses and spent the stipulated number of years in rank.

A senior military source disclosed that the move created tension within the ranks, as many officers viewed it as a breach of established promotion procedures and a threat to discipline and hierarchy within the armed forces.

Presidency Steps In After Consultations

According to sources, the reversal followed consultations “at the highest levels of the military and the presidency regarding morale and promotion procedures.”

President Tinubu was reportedly briefed on the wider implications of the promotion, including its potential impact on military discipline and internal cohesion, prompting him to approve the reversal.

Relief Sweeps Through Armed Forces

Sources described a sense of relief across the armed forces after the decision was announced. One military source said:

“The decision to promote the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Brigadier General was rescinded yesterday. The Commander-in-Chief was misled but acted promptly after being fully briefed. Officers across the armed forces welcomed the decision.”

The Presidency also confirmed that the President acted appropriately in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Decoration Ceremony Cancelled

Before the reversal, preparations for the decoration ceremony had reportedly been completed. Family members and invited guests had already been notified of the investiture before it was abruptly cancelled.

A source revealed that the President listened to interventions from respected military elders, including retired General Alani Akinrinade, a former Chief of Army Staff.

COAS Briefs President on Morale Concerns

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who was attending a conference in Lagos, was reportedly summoned to Abuja to brief the President on the growing dissatisfaction among officers over the promotion.

According to the source, the COAS expressed concerns about low morale among soldiers and the negative consequences of what was perceived as an unwarranted elevation.

Review of Presidential Security Structure

Beyond the promotion controversy, sources said the Presidency has begun reviewing the structure, ranks, and roles within the President’s security detail, amid concerns that some positions may be occupied by officers whose ranks exceed traditional requirements.

Questions have also been raised internally about compliance with established protocols across the military, police, and intelligence services assigned to the President.

Questions Over Promotion Standards Persist

The ADC’s promotion had earlier drawn scrutiny from within the military, with officers questioning qualification criteria, precedent, and compliance with long-standing promotion guidelines.

While the reversal has eased immediate tensions, sources say broader concerns remain over the need to strictly uphold merit-based promotions to maintain discipline, morale, and professionalism within Nigeria’s armed forces.
