Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has threatened to mobilise a protest at the Presidential Villa if the abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State are not rescued.
Sowore made the declaration in a post shared on his X account on Sunday, expressing frustration over the continued captivity of the victims.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu and the nation’s security chiefs must take immediate action to secure the release of those being held by kidnappers.
“If Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his service chiefs fail to track down and secure the release of the abducted Oyo schoolchildren and other kidnapped people, we will have no choice but to occupy Aso Rock Villa this week,” Sowore wrote.
The activist’s statement comes amid growing public concern over the fate of teachers and pupils abducted during attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15 when armed men invaded schools in the area, causing panic among students, staff and residents.
Reports indicate that at least 45 pupils and teachers were abducted during the attacks, while an assistant head teacher and a commercial motorcyclist were killed.
The incident has generated nationwide outrage, with labour unions, civil society organisations, political figures and celebrities calling on authorities to intensify rescue efforts.
Families of the victims have also continued to appeal to the government and security agencies for urgent intervention.
Sowore’s threat of an “Occupy Aso Rock” protest adds to mounting pressure on the Federal Government as concerns grow over insecurity and the safety of schoolchildren across the country.
Meanwhile, security agencies have maintained that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the abducted victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
