INEC Announces Date for 2027 Presidential Election

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has officially announced the dates for Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, the INEC boss said the commission has formally set the electoral process in motion, in line with the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022.

According to INEC, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on:

  • President and Vice President

  • Senate

  • House of Representatives

Governorship Election Date

INEC also announced that the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on:

INEC Explains Why the Dates Were Chosen

Amupitan explained that the election dates were fixed based on constitutional provisions which state that elections must hold:

  • Not earlier than 150 days

  • And not later than 30 days

before the expiration of tenure for elected officials.

He also stated that the Electoral Act requires INEC to publish a notice of election at least 360 days before the election date.

The INEC Chairman revealed that the full timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 elections has already been:

  • Uploaded to INEC’s official website

  • Circulated to registered political parties

  • Shared with key stakeholders

He also directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across the 36 states and FCT to publish election notices in their constituencies.

INEC Speaks on Electoral Amendment Bill

Amupitan also addressed the Electoral Amendment Bill currently before the National Assembly, saying INEC supports reforms that will strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and improve election credibility.
