Confusion Trails ISIS Leader Abu-Bilal al-Minuki After Nigerian Military Earlier Declared Him Dead In 2024

Fresh controversy has erupted online after conflicting reports emerged surrounding the death of top ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, following a recent joint military operation involving the United States Africa Command, AFRICOM, and the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The controversy intensified after Nigerians resurfaced earlier military reports from 2024 which had already claimed that al-Minuki was killed during counter-terrorism operations in northern Nigeria.

However, on May 16, 2026, both the United States and Nigerian governments announced that the ISIS figure was eliminated during a fresh overnight operation in the Lake Chad Basin region.

According to official statements, the operation targeted a militant compound in northeastern Nigeria and reportedly killed al-Minuki alongside several senior ISIS fighters and lieutenants.

AFRICOM later released video footage from the operation, describing the mission as a successful strike against one of the world’s most wanted terrorists.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump confirmed the development in a statement shared on Truth Social.

“Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield,” Trump stated.

President Bola Tinubu also confirmed the operation and praised the growing intelligence and security collaboration between Nigeria and the United States.

Who Was Abu-Bilal al-Minuki?

Security reports identified Abu-Bilal al-Minuki as a Nigeria-born ISIS commander from Borno State who reportedly rose through the ranks of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP.

He was believed to oversee strategic propaganda operations, financial coordination, weapons manufacturing, and drone-related activities for ISIS-linked networks operating across the Lake Chad Basin and Sahel region.

The United States had earlier designated him as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2023.

Questions Over 2024 “Death” Claim

The latest announcement quickly triggered widespread skepticism online after Nigerians resurfaced reports from early 2024 where the Nigerian military reportedly announced that al-Minuki had already been neutralised during Operation Hadin Kai.

The contradiction has fueled intense debate across social media platforms, with many users questioning the accuracy of official military reports.

Several Nigerians shared screenshots of the 2024 reports alongside the latest US-backed announcement, sparking accusations of misinformation and lack of transparency.

The situation has also revived memories of past instances where terror leaders, including former Boko Haram commander Abubakar Shekau, were reportedly declared dead multiple times before their deaths were independently confirmed.

Social Media Reactions Explode

The story has dominated conversations across X, Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms.

While some Nigerians praised the latest operation as a major breakthrough against terrorism, many others questioned why conflicting information had emerged regarding the same individual.

Some online users accused authorities of exaggerating military successes, while others defended the security agencies and argued that terror groups often spread false information and use body doubles or misinformation tactics during conflicts.

The controversy has further amplified public conversations around transparency, military communication, counter-terrorism operations, and public trust in official security updates.

Despite the growing debate online, both Nigerian and US authorities continue to maintain that the May 2026 operation successfully eliminated Abu-Bilal al-Minuki and dealt a major blow to ISIS operations within the region.
