The Federal Government of Nigeria, acting through the National Flood Early Warning Centre (part of the Federal Ministry of Environment), has issued a five-day flood alert covering September 4 to 8, 2025. The warning includes 14 states across the country, alerting 43 local areas to the risk of heavy rainfall and potential flooding. The alert was issued by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood & Coastal Zone Management Department.

Affected locations span diverse regions, including:

  • Zamfara State (e.g., Anka, Kaura Namoda),

  • Taraba (e.g., Garkowa, Gembu),

  • Kano (Gwarzo, Karaye),

  • Ebonyi, Cross River, Abia, Yobe, Plateau, Borno, Imo, Niger, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Akwa Ibom.

The alert comes amid a broader backdrop of climate vulnerability in Nigeria. The country continues to battle flooding, which damages farmlands, disrupts communities, and increases disease risk.

Lagos State has also issued a separate warning, emphasizing the danger of a possible collapse of its lagoon system resulting from ongoing heavy rainfall and the city’s coastal nature. The rising lagoon levels, combined with tidal influences and insufficient drainage, could create a phenomenon known as tidal lock, hampering water discharge and escalating flood risks.

Residents in low-lying and lagoon-adjacent areas are urged to take extra caution, avoid wading through floodwaters, and desist from dumping waste in drainage channels to reduce blockages.
