Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has opened up on the real reason Nigeria crashed out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after their painful semi-final defeat to Morocco on Wednesday night.

Nigeria were knocked out 4–2 on penalties by the AFCON hosts after 120 minutes of goalless football, ending their hopes of reaching the final.

Chelle Admits Something Was Missing

Speaking during his post-match press conference, Chelle admitted that the Super Eagles were not at their usual level, especially in terms of energy, movement, and physical presence.

According to the coach, Nigeria’s game plan was built around high pressing, but execution fell short.

“We played this match with high pressing, because if you don’t press, you leave spaces and the situation becomes very complicated,” Chelle said.

However, he conceded that his team struggled to match Morocco’s intensity.

“From a technical point of view, the Super Eagles weren’t at the same level as we displayed in our other matches.”

Was It Fatigue? Chelle Responds

While many fans blamed fatigue after Nigeria’s demanding run in the tournament, Chelle stopped short of directly using it as an excuse — but hinted strongly at physical limitations.

“I don’t want to say the reason was fatigue, but the truth is that we lacked movement and power,” he added.

Painful Exit, Tough Questions Ahead

Nigeria had impressed throughout the tournament with discipline and defensive solidity, but struggled to create clear chances against Morocco. The lack of attacking sharpness ultimately proved costly in the penalty shootout.

The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff, while Morocco advance to the final.

⚽ Do you agree with Chelle’s assessment, or did Nigeria simply get their tactics wrong?

Fans are already divided as debate rages on social media.
