Veteran Nigerian producer Wale Adenuga has addressed the controversy surrounding claims made by Nollywood actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, widely known for playing the iconic Papa Ajasco.
The response follows Ayoyinka’s recent interview where he spoke about financial struggles and restrictions tied to the use of the Papa Ajasco character.
In a detailed statement, Adenuga described the claims as misleading and clarified that there is no conflict between him and the actor.
He stated that Ayoyinka is free to take up acting roles and commercial jobs outside the Papa Ajasco series. However, he explained that the character remains a copyrighted brand owned by Wale Adenuga Productions, and any commercial use requires approval.
According to him, this policy is standard practice to protect the integrity of the brand.
Adenuga questioned the actor’s claim of hardship, pointing to his long career both in the civil service and entertainment.
He noted that Ayoyinka worked for over three decades with the Lagos State Government and earned income from acting engagements over the years. He also mentioned that the actor had access to vehicles at different times and owns a house in Ogun State.
The producer asked what happened to the earnings and benefits accumulated over the years.
Adenuga explained that production of Papa Ajasco and Company runs for about six weeks annually. He said this allows actors enough time to pursue other ventures throughout the year.
He added that other cast members continue to secure roles in different productions using their personal identities without restriction.
Wale Adenuga Productions maintained that it operates within industry standards and fulfills its financial obligations to actors and crew.
The company stressed that any narrative suggesting neglect or exploitation is false and does not reflect its long-standing reputation in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
The controversy started after Ayoyinka revealed that he cannot freely use the Papa Ajasco name or costume without permission, a situation he said has limited some opportunities.
