Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has explained why he did not attend the national summit of opposition parties held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The summit, which brought together several major opposition figures, focused on early alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those reported at the gathering were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and former Senate President David Mark.

Sowore, however, was absent from the event, leading to questions from supporters and political observers.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the AAC leader said Nigeria needs a genuine alternative to the ruling system and not a return of politicians he described as failed leaders.

According to him, many of those at the summit had previously occupied positions of power during years marked by corruption, stagnation, and poor governance.

He stated that the African Action Congress would not participate in what he called an attempt to recycle old political actors under the banner of opposition politics.

Sowore said his party remains committed to building a people-driven movement based on integrity, accountability, and real transformation.

He added that Nigerians deserve a new political direction rather than a reshuffling of familiar faces from established parties.

The activist also said his movement would continue mobilising citizens across the country around a credible national vision.

His comments have sparked debate online, with some agreeing that Nigeria needs fresh leadership, while others argue that broad opposition unity is necessary to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
