A photograph capturing Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi exchanging a handshake with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sparked widespread debate across social media platforms.

The image, which was shared online by Atiku, shows Obi slightly bending forward while greeting the former vice president. Since its appearance, Nigerians have expressed differing opinions, with some interpreting the posture as a sign of respect, while others view it as excessive deference.

Critics argue that such body language is inappropriate for a politician seeking Nigeria’s highest office, claiming it could be perceived as political weakness or a lack of confidence. Some commentators have also linked the moment to Obi’s political positioning, questioning how assertive he might be within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a platform linked to both political figures.

However, activist and public affairs commentator Maduabuchi Idam has dismissed these interpretations, urging Nigerians to focus on leadership substance rather than physical gestures. According to Idam, drawing sweeping conclusions from a single image is misleading and distracts from more important national issues.

In a statement made available to journalists, Idam acknowledged that photographs can easily be misinterpreted but warned against assigning deep political meaning to a brief interaction. He noted that Obi has consistently maintained a reputation for calmness, discipline, and principle, adding that humility should not be mistaken for incapacity.

Idam further argued that Nigeria’s governance challenges are not rooted in a lack of strong personalities but in the repeated selection of leaders who lack the necessary competence and integrity. He emphasized that leadership should be judged by track record, capacity, and character rather than optics or momentary body language.

He called on Nigerians to encourage authenticity among political actors, stressing that the nation’s progress depends on evaluating leaders based on their ability to deliver results, not on perceived displays of dominance.
