Nigeria finally laid their penalty shoot-out demons to rest after edging past Egypt on spot-kicks to secure the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The dramatic third-place clash ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, with no extra time played, forcing both sides straight into a penalty shoot-out — a scenario that had haunted the Super Eagles earlier in the tournament.

Redemption After Morocco Heartbreak

Nigeria came into the match still hurting from their semi-final loss to Morocco, where they were knocked out on penalties by the host nation. But against Egypt, history tilted in Nigeria’s favour.

Nwabali the Hero

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the undisputed hero of the night, producing two huge saves during the shoot-out.

He denied:

  • Mohamed Salah

  • Omar Marmoush

Those saves proved decisive as Nigeria converted four of their penalties, while Egypt managed just two.

Record Ninth Bronze Medal

The Super Eagles eventually won the shoot-out 4-2, sealing the bronze medal for a record ninth time in AFCON history — a fitting end to their campaign.

Eyes on the Final

Attention now turns to the AFCON 2025 final, where Morocco will face Senegal tomorrow in what promises to be a thrilling showdown.

For Nigeria, however, the night belonged to redemption, resilience, and a long-awaited victory from the penalty spot.
