Nigerian singer Simi (real name Simisola Bolatito Kosoko) is facing renewed criticism on social media after an old tweet from 2012 resurfaced, with many users accusing it of sexualising a four-year-old child.

The tweet, posted on March 14, 2012, via her X (formerly Twitter) account @SympLySimi, described a young boy named David, whom she said was four years old, as having a “crush” on her. In the post, Simi wrote that the child often moved close to her, acted as though he wanted to kiss her, and rested his head on her lap, before jokingly asking if she should “give him a chance.”

The exact tweet reads:

“David has a crush on me. He kips comn close; actin lik he wana lock lips n den he puts his head on my lap. Shd I giv him a chance? P.S: Hes 4.”

Social Media Outrage

The resurfaced post has sparked intense backlash, with many users describing the language as inappropriate and disturbing.

An X user, @Eregechi12, wrote:

“4 asin 4 years old or 4 decades old 😳😳 Is the word lock lips supposed to be in the same sentence with a 4 year old 😳😳😳”

Another user, @captainleke, commented:

“4 years old child!!! Lock this pedophile up.”

Others called for investigation, while some accused critics of applying double standards, arguing that the reaction would have been even more severe if the tweet had been written by a male celebrity.

Context: Mirabel and the Rape Allegation Saga

The renewed scrutiny of Simi’s past posts comes amid the ongoing online controversy involving TikToker Mirabel, who recently admitted that her viral rape allegation was fabricated.

The debate intensified after social media activist VeryDarkMan revealed that Mirabel confessed during a phone conversation that she made up the assault story and created fake messages to support her claim.

During the height of the Mirabel controversy, Simi had taken to X to strongly condemn rape culture, urging men to hold one another accountable and questioning why people react negatively when rapists are called out. While many initially praised her stance, critics later accused her of downplaying the issue of false rape accusations.

Following Mirabel’s confession, social media users began revisiting old posts by public figures who had commented on the issue, leading to the resurfacing of Simi’s 2012 tweet.

As of now, Simi has not publicly responded to the renewed backlash. The debate continues online, touching on issues of accountability, context, changing social norms, and the line between poor judgment and criminal implication in old social media posts.
