The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced that power supply has been fully restored nationwide and system stability normalised following a system disturbance that occurred on Monday.

NISO’s management disclosed this in an official statement issued in Abuja, assuring Nigerians that electricity supply has returned across all affected areas.

What Happened

According to the system operator, the national grid experienced a system disturbance at about 2:01 p.m. on Monday, which resulted in a partial grid collapse and widespread power outages in parts of the country.

Preliminary findings indicate that the incident involved the tripping of several power-generating units and critical 330kV transmission lines, leading to disruptions in electricity supply.

Investigation Ongoing

NISO stated that investigations into the cause and sequence of events leading to the disturbance are currently ongoing. The operator added that appropriate preventive measures will be implemented to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.

“We wish to inform the general public and relevant stakeholders that the national grid experienced a system disturbance at 2:01 p.m. on Monday, which led to a partial collapse,” the statement read.

Gas Pipeline Vandalism Worsened Situation

NISO recalled that the vandalisation of the Lagos–Escravos gas pipeline on December 10 had already caused shortages in gas supply to power plants, weakening electricity generation nationwide.

“This has further contributed to the fragility and weakness of the national grid,” the operator noted.

Delta Power Station Operated on Island Mode

Despite the disturbance, NISO explained that the Delta generation complex successfully operated on island mode at the 132kV sub-transmission level, ensuring continued electricity supply to several locations.

This allowed power supply to Oghara, Amukpe, Benin, and Efunrun 132kV substations, with a combined output of 114 megawatts generated from four units at the Delta Thermal Power Station.

Rapid Response and Restoration

In line with established operational procedures, NISO said it promptly activated system response measures using its dispatch and monitoring tools at the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo, leading to the gradual restoration of power across the country.

Reassurance to Nigerians

The system operator reassured Nigerians of its commitment to proactive grid management, stressing that it will continue to apply best operational practices to improve the stability, resilience, and reliability of the national electricity grid.

NISO added that further updates would be provided as investigations into the disturbance are concluded.
