Authorities in Kwara State have imposed a 24-hour curfew on the Oro-Ago community in Ifelodun Local Government Area as part of urgent security measures aimed at countering terrorist activities and restoring calm in the area.

The curfew, which takes effect from 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, was announced by the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Abdul Rasheed Femi Yusuf. The decision follows heightened security concerns and ongoing military operations within the community.

Total Restriction on Movement

According to the local government chairman, the curfew places a complete restriction on movement throughout Oro-Ago district. Both human and vehicular activities are prohibited during the period of the curfew.

“Within this period, there will be no human or vehicular traffic in the entire district,” Yusuf said.

He explained that the measure is designed to support an ongoing security clearance operation being carried out by the Nigerian military, with the objective of flushing out suspected terrorists and preventing further threats to residents.

Security Operation Underway

Local authorities described the curfew as part of a coordinated security strategy to destabilise criminal elements operating in and around Oro-Ago. While specific details of the military operation were not disclosed, officials said the action was necessary to safeguard lives and property.

The chairman assured residents that the curfew is temporary and subject to review, depending on developments from the security operation.

“Further reviews of this measure will be communicated,” the statement added.

As of the time of reporting, security personnel were said to be enforcing compliance with the order, while residents were advised to remain indoors and cooperate fully with authorities.

What We Know So Far

•A 24-hour curfew is in force in Oro-Ago community from 6:00 a.m. Wednesday

•The curfew was declared by the Ifelodun Local Government chairman

•All movement—pedestrian and vehicular—is restricted

•The measure is in support of an ongoing military security clearance operation

•Authorities say the goal is to disrupt terrorist activities and protect residents

Background: Rising Security Concerns

Parts of Kwara State, particularly communities close to forested borders, have in recent years faced growing security challenges linked to banditry and terrorist infiltration spilling over from neighbouring regions. Security agencies have increasingly relied on coordinated operations involving the military and local authorities to prevent escalation.

Curfews are often imposed in such situations to deny criminal groups freedom of movement while allowing security forces to operate effectively.

Why This Matters

The curfew in Oro-Ago highlights the expanding footprint of Nigeria’s security challenges beyond traditionally affected zones. For residents, the restriction disrupts daily life but is presented by authorities as a necessary step to prevent greater harm.

It also underscores the increasing role of local governments in frontline security coordination, particularly in rural communities vulnerable to armed groups.

What Happens Next

Officials say the situation will be reviewed based on feedback from the military operation. Residents have been urged to remain calm, comply fully with the curfew, and report any suspicious activity once restrictions are eased.

Further updates are expected from the Ifelodun Local Government Council and security agencies as the operation progresses.
