At least 12 people have been killed following a violent attack on a mining site in Ratoso Fan community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Tuesday night.

The victims were reportedly attacked while working at the site, with several others still unaccounted for after the incident.

Gunmen Open Fire on Miners

Eyewitnesses said armed assailants stormed the mining area late at night and opened fire on miners, triggering panic as many fled for safety. Residents of the community expressed shock over the attack, describing it as another tragic episode in the region’s ongoing security challenges.

Dagallang Davott, Chairman of the Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation and Secretary of the Mining Committee in Barkin Ladi, confirmed the incident, stating that the casualty figure may rise.

“The incident happened during the night. Many people fled for their lives, and 12 fatalities have been confirmed so far,” he said.

A resident of the community, Moses Daniel, also described the attack as deeply disturbing, noting growing fears among locals over the safety of mining activities in the area.

Security Agencies Notified

The Nigerian Army’s 3rd Division has reportedly been informed of the attack, with military officials promising to follow up as investigations continue.

The incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks in Plateau State, renewing concerns about insecurity in rural and mining communities.

Calls for Improved Security

The attack comes just days after Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, visited key security officials in Abuja — including the Chiefs of Air and Naval Staff and the Minister of Defence — to discuss strategies aimed at curbing violence and protecting rural communities ahead of the Yuletide season.

Community leaders and residents are now calling for stronger security presence and proactive measures to safeguard civilians engaged in mining and other vulnerable activities across the state.

As investigations continue, residents remain anxious, emphasizing the urgent need for improved security to prevent further loss of lives.
