Human rights activist and convener of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, Omoyele Sowore, has been arrested by security operatives at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred shortly after Sowore exchanged pleasantries with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, within the court premises.

Arrest Linked to #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest

Sowore’s arrest is believed to be connected to the recent #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration held in Abuja, where protesters demanded Kanu’s unconditional release.

The rally, which took place earlier this week, was disrupted by a heavy security presence, with teargas fired and several protesters arrested.

Among those detained were Barrister Aloy Ejimakor (Kanu’s lawyer), Emmanuel Kanu (Nnamdi Kanu’s brother), and about 11 other activists, who were later remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

Sowore Escaped Earlier, Later Apprehended at Court

During the protest, Sowore reportedly escaped arrest amid the chaos as police operatives dispersed the crowd with force.

However, during Thursday’s court sitting, where Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorism trial resumed, Sowore appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja to show solidarity.

He was seen exchanging greetings with Kanu before security operatives moved in and arrested him immediately after their interaction.

Background

Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters and a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), is known for his consistent activism and criticism of government oppression.

His arrest adds to the growing tension between human rights advocates and Nigerian security agencies, especially regarding freedom of expression and protest rights.

As of the time of filing this report, details of his whereabouts remain unclear, and no official statement has been issued by the Nigeria Police Force or the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding the arrest.
