Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have launched a deadly attack on a military outpost in Monguno, Borno State, killing at least 22 Nigerian Army personnel.
Sources familiar with the incident said the attack occurred overnight as troops were preparing for a renewed offensive against insurgents in the region.
Among those reportedly killed was a senior officer, Colonel I. A. Muhammad, who was serving with the 242 Battalion in Borno, a key area affected by the long running insurgency.
The attack adds to growing concerns over security in the North East, with reports indicating that several senior military officers have been killed in recent weeks.
A spokesperson for the Nigerian Army had not issued an official response as of the time of this report.
Videos believed to be linked to the attack have circulated online, further drawing attention to the incident.
The Boko Haram insurgency, which began in 2009, has remained one of Nigeria’s most persistent security challenges, affecting multiple administrations over the years.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has previously pledged to strengthen military operations and intensify efforts to address the ongoing violence in the region.
