Why Hantavirus Is Trending Worldwide After Deadly Cruise Ship Outbreak
A suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius has triggered global concern, with discussions spreading rapidly across social media, including in Nigeria.

The ship, carrying 147 passengers and crew members from 23 countries, reportedly departed from Ushuaia for an Antarctic expedition before stopping at Saint Helena and later anchoring near Cape Verde.

According to reports, authorities have recorded seven cases linked to the outbreak as of May 4, 2026.

Two cases were laboratory-confirmed while five remain under investigation.

Three deaths have also been reported, with one patient said to be in critical condition in South Africa.

Health officials believe the cases involve the Andes strain of hantavirus, a rare variant known for occasional human-to-human transmission.

This has intensified concern because most hantavirus strains spread mainly through contact with infected rodents or exposure to rodent urine, saliva, or droppings.

The ship has reportedly been placed under quarantine while passengers and crew remain restricted to their cabins.

International health authorities, including the World Health Organization and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, are coordinating investigations, testing, and contact tracing efforts.

What Is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a group of viruses commonly carried by rodents such as rats and mice.

The disease is not airborne like COVID-19 and is usually contracted through inhaling particles contaminated by rodent waste.

Symptoms often begin like the flu and may include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness

In severe cases, patients can develop Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, a dangerous condition that affects breathing and can lead to respiratory failure.

Health experts say fatality rates for severe strains can range between 30 and 50 percent if not treated early.

Risk To Nigeria And Africa
Health authorities currently describe the risk of widespread transmission in Africa as low.

The outbreak is believed to be largely confined to the cruise ship and known contacts.

However, monitoring and tracing efforts continue due to the unusual nature of the incident.

Experts advise travelers and the general public to maintain good hygiene practices and avoid contact with rodents or rodent-infested environments.

Officials have also urged the public to avoid panic and rely on verified information from health agencies as investigations continue.
