Tosin Eniolorunda, co-founder and chief executive officer of Moniepoint, has sparked major reactions online following comments about talent shortages in Nigeria.
Speaking during The Platform in Lagos around Workers’ Day, Eniolorunda revealed that Moniepoint currently has about 500 unfilled vacancies.
According to him, the company decided to focus entirely on hiring Nigerian talent instead of recruiting internationally, but has struggled to find enough candidates who meet the standards required for a globally competitive fintech company.
He linked the challenge to several issues, including weaknesses in the education system, social media distractions, internet fraud culture, and changing societal values.
The comments quickly went viral across social media platforms, triggering intense debate among Nigerians.
Many critics accused the fintech boss of downplaying the abilities of Nigerian youths despite the country’s high unemployment rate and economic difficulties.
Others argued that the real problem is poor pay and unfavourable working conditions within many local companies.
Some social media users also pointed to brain drain, saying many highly skilled Nigerians now prefer remote international jobs or have relocated abroad for better opportunities.
Reports of customers threatening to close accounts or return POS machines linked to Moniepoint also surfaced online as reactions intensified.
However, some supporters defended the CEO’s position, arguing that his comments reflected genuine concerns about employability, education quality, and workforce readiness.
The controversy has now expanded into a broader national discussion around skills development, salary expectations, youth culture, and the future of Nigeria’s tech industry.
Moniepoint remains one of Nigeria’s leading fintech success stories, particularly in digital payments and POS services, making the debate even more significant within the country’s growing technology ecosystem.
