Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election in the state.
The endorsement reportedly came after a closed-door meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest for the governorship seat.
Sources said the meeting was attended by members of the State Executive Council and influential party stakeholders.
Also present were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro and former senator Ganiyu Solomon.
Speaking after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu said party leaders and stakeholders unanimously agreed that Hamzat is qualified and prepared to lead Lagos State.
According to the governor, the deputy governor has deep knowledge of governance and understands the workings of the state.
Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as experienced, capable, and ready for the responsibility ahead.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, whom he credited for playing a key role in the political emergence of both himself and Hamzat.
The development is expected to shape early political calculations within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2019, is widely seen as one of the leading figures likely to seek the party’s ticket.
The endorsement has already sparked reactions across political circles, with observers watching how other aspirants and party blocs may respond in the coming months.
