United States authorities have arrested a suspect following the shooting scare at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., which led to the emergency evacuation of senior officials, including former President Donald Trump.
Officials identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, who is now facing firearms and assault-related charges as investigations continue.
According to law enforcement agencies, the incident happened at the Washington Hilton Hotel, venue of the high-profile annual event attended by top political leaders, journalists, and public officials.
Authorities alleged that the suspect breached a security checkpoint before opening fire.
He was reportedly armed with a shotgun, a handgun, multiple knives, and was wearing a ballistic vest.
Secret Service agents immediately responded and subdued the suspect after a confrontation.
During the exchange, one Secret Service officer was reportedly struck at close range but survived due to body armour.
The injured officer was taken to hospital and is said to be in stable condition.
Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were quickly escorted out of the venue as panic spread across the hall.
Witnesses said several guests took cover under tables after hearing multiple gunshots.
Reacting afterward, Trump described the suspect as a would-be assassin and confirmed he was in custody.
He also praised the injured officer, saying the agent was protected by safety gear and remained in good condition.
Authorities said early findings suggest the suspect acted alone and had no known criminal history.
Federal investigators, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have launched a wider probe, with searches reportedly linked to a property in Torrance, California.
Deputy Director of the United States Secret Service, Matthew Quin, commended the swift response of officers, saying the suspect was stopped immediately.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer also reacted, condemning any attack on democratic institutions and expressing relief that no senior official was harmed.
The event, which had drawn several top figures including Vice President JD Vance and cabinet members, has now been postponed as investigations continue.
