A Nigerian man has sparked widespread reactions online after sharing the story of a commercial tricycle rider, popularly known as a keke rider, who reportedly returned ₦2.5 million mistakenly transferred to his bank account by a passenger.
The incident was shared on X, where the narrator praised the rider’s honesty despite the significant financial temptation involved.
According to the account, the rider had earlier transported a passenger to a bank and was expecting a payment of ₦2,500 for the trip.
However, the passenger allegedly made an error during the transfer and mistakenly sent ₦2.5 million instead.
Sharing the story, the X user wrote:
“My keke guy told me something this morning that left me speechless. The passenger he carried to the bank this morning mistakenly transferred N2.5 million to him instead of N2,500.”
The narrator explained that the rider discovered the transaction after stopping at a restaurant to eat following the trip.
“He noticed the alert after stopping at a restaurant to eat, and according to him, all kinds of thoughts started running through his head at once,” he stated.
Despite the unexpected windfall, the rider reportedly decided to return the money immediately.
According to the post, he travelled from Abakpa to Independence Layout in search of the passenger and eventually located him at the bank where he had been dropped off earlier.
“But despite everything, he drove all the way back from Abakpa to Independence Layout, walked into the bank, found the man, and informed him immediately,” the narrator said.
Upon being informed, the passenger reportedly checked his transaction records and realised the mistake.
“The man checked his debit alert, shouted ‘Jesus!’ in shock, and realized the mistake,” the post added.
However, what generated the strongest reactions online was the reward allegedly given to the rider after returning the money.
According to the narration, the passenger handed the tricycle operator only ₦500 in appreciation for his honesty and efforts.
“After recovering N2.5 million, the only thing the man gave my keke rider for his honesty and fuel was N500. Just five hundred naira,” the X user wrote.
“It wasn’t even enough to compensate the fuel he wasted to look for him.”
The story has since gone viral, with many social media users applauding the rider’s integrity while criticising the passenger for what they described as an inadequate gesture of appreciation after recovering such a substantial amount.
