Nigerian activist lawyer Aisha Yesufu has raised serious concerns over the increasing number of casualties among Nigerian soldiers, urging lawmakers to take urgent action.

In a statement shared online, Yesufu described the loss of troops as happening at a “sickeningly alarming rate,” questioning whether the National Assembly of Nigeria is doing enough to address the situation.

Calls Out the National Assembly

Yesufu criticised what she described as a passive legislature, arguing that lawmakers elected to represent citizens must take stronger steps to demand accountability from those responsible for national security.

She warned that the country cannot afford a weak legislative response in the face of growing security challenges.

“It is one thing not to have a Commander-in-Chief; it is another disastrous thing to have a passive and controlled National Assembly,” she stated.

Questions on Soldier Welfare

The activist also questioned whether the National Assembly has summoned relevant authorities to explain the increasing casualties among troops deployed in various operations across Nigeria.

According to her, lawmakers should be asking critical questions and creating policies that protect both soldiers and their families.

She asked:

  • Who has been summoned to explain the rising casualties?
  • What laws exist to protect Nigerian soldiers?
  • What support systems are available for families of fallen troops?

Concerns Over Families of Fallen Soldiers

Yesufu further highlighted the plight of families left behind by soldiers killed in the line of duty. She stressed the need for clearer welfare structures and stronger protections for dependents of fallen heroes.

Her remarks come amid renewed public concern over Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges and the risks faced by military personnel deployed across the country.

Many Nigerians on social media have echoed her concerns, calling for greater transparency, improved military welfare, and stronger oversight from lawmakers responsible for national security matters.
