The United States Mission Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of the United States Embassy Abuja due to potential protests expected in the area.

The announcement was made in a notice shared on the Mission’s official X page on Thursday, informing the public that routine operations at the embassy would be suspended temporarily.

According to the notice, the embassy will remain closed for regular services until Monday, March 9, 2026.

Visa and Citizen Services Affected

The temporary shutdown has affected several scheduled appointments, including visa interviews and services for American citizens.

The Mission confirmed that appointments initially scheduled for March 4 and March 5 will now be moved to next week.

In the statement, the embassy advised applicants to check their email or visa application accounts for updated appointment dates.

  • Visa applicants should check their email or AVITs account for the new appointment schedule.
  • American Citizen Services (ACS) applicants are advised to check their email for rescheduled dates.

Further Instructions for Applicants

The embassy also stated that anyone who does not receive a new appointment date should seek assistance through the Visa Navigator platform.

Members of the public have been encouraged to monitor the embassy’s official website and social media channels for further updates regarding the situation.

The notice did not provide details about the planned protests or the specific security concerns, but the decision underscores precautionary measures taken by the U.S. diplomatic mission to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.
