A Nigerian man has stirred serious debate on social media after revealing a controversial marriage advice allegedly given by his pastor during a church exercise.
The man, whose video has now gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), explained that church members were asked to write down the kind of person they hoped to marry. According to him, the responses he saw triggered a reaction — especially after he noticed what one lady reportedly wrote.
In the trending clip shared by @dammiedammie35, the man claimed that his pastor cautioned ladies from poor backgrounds not to set their sights too high if they are not ready to “settle for less.”
He quoted the pastor as saying that a “daughter of a poor man” who refuses to consider certain men should rather marry someone within her social class, such as a bricklayer, carpenter, or electrician.
The man further claimed that the statement was made after a lady allegedly wrote that she wanted to marry a medical doctor, which he described as unrealistic.
Nigerians React: Ambition or Unrealistic Expectations?
The video quickly gained traction and has since reignited a heated conversation online about relationships, social class, and expectations.
While some social media users argued that there is nothing wrong with aiming high, others insisted that expecting a top professional partner without considering compatibility, growth, or personal development can be unrealistic.
A few commenters also questioned the tone of the message, saying the advice may come across as insulting and unnecessarily harsh toward women.
Debate Continues Online
As expected, Nigerians remain divided — with one side defending the pastor’s alleged advice as “realistic,” and the other side saying it unfairly pressures women and promotes class discrimination.
The video continues to circulate widely as the discussion grows.
