Senegal have emerged champions of Africa after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 in a dramatic and highly controversial final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday night.
Tense First Half Ends Goalless
The final, played in Rabat, lived up to its billing as a clash between the continent’s two highest-ranked teams, Morocco and Senegal.
Both sides cancelled each other out in a cagey first half, with chances at a premium and defences firmly on top.
VAR Drama, Disallowed Goal, and Penalty Chaos
The second half appeared to be heading for a stalemate until drama erupted. Senegal thought they had taken the lead when Ismaila Sarr headed home, only for the referee to disallow the goal for a foul on Achraf Hakimi.
Moments later, controversy reached boiling point in the 97th minute when Morocco were awarded a penalty after a contentious decision. Tempers flared, and Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in protest.
When order was restored, Brahim Díaz stepped up — but his audacious panenka penalty was brilliantly saved by Édouard Mendy, sending Senegal’s bench into wild celebrations.
Pape Gueye Delivers the Knockout Blow
The match dragged into extra time, and just when penalties seemed inevitable, Senegal struck.
In the first half of extra time, Pape Gueye unleashed a sublime left-footed finish, silencing the Rabat crowd and putting Senegal ahead.
Morocco pushed desperately for an equaliser but were unable to break down Senegal’s resolute defence.

The final whistle confirmed Senegal as 2025 AFCON champions, sealing a famous victory on Moroccan soil after one of the most dramatic finals in recent tournament history.
