AFCON DRAMA EXPLODES: Algeria Reports Nigeria Match to FIFA & CAF After Shocking 2–0 Defeat

Fresh controversy has erupted at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) officially petitioned FIFA and CAF over what it described as questionable refereeing in its quarter-final loss to Nigeria.

Algeria crashed out of the tournament on Saturday after a 2–0 defeat to the Super Eagles, but the fallout from the match is now threatening to overshadow Nigeria’s qualification for the semi-finals.

“Serious Questions” Over Refereeing

In a strongly worded letter sent to both football governing bodies, the Algerian FA claimed that several officiating decisions during the match “raised serious questions” and sparked widespread anger among Algerian players, officials, and supporters.

According to the federation, the referee’s calls not only influenced the outcome of the game but also undermined the credibility of African refereeing, potentially damaging the image of African football on the global stage.

The complaint reportedly demanded:

  • A full investigation into the officiating
  • Clarification on disputed decisions
  • Corrective action in line with CAF and FIFA regulations

Post-Match Chaos in Marrakech

Tensions spilled over immediately after the final whistle in Marrakech, where Algerian and Nigerian players clashed on the pitch, forcing officials to intervene.

The situation escalated further as Algerian fans vandalised parts of the stadium, prompting emergency intervention from stadium security to restore order.

CAF Already Responds

On Monday, CAF confirmed that it had opened an investigation into the post-match incidents involving players and fans, even before Algeria’s formal petition became public.

While CAF’s probe focuses on crowd trouble and on-field clashes, Algeria’s complaint adds a new dimension — refereeing integrity.

What This Means Going Forward

  • Nigeria’s qualification remains intact
  • CAF and FIFA may review match footage
  • Referees involved could face scrutiny or sanctions if wrongdoing is established
  • The controversy could influence future officiating standards at AFCON

For now, the Super Eagles march on, but Algeria’s protest has ensured that the quarter-final clash will be remembered as one of the most controversial moments of AFCON 2025.

Football fans are divided online — some insist Algeria is deflecting blame, while others argue African refereeing must be held to higher standards.

One thing is certain: AFCON 2025 just got a lot more dramatic.
