Former Senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Godiya Akwashiki, has passed away at the age of 52, drawing tributes across the state’s political landscape.
Family sources confirmed on Thursday that Akwashiki died on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

Sources said the lawmaker battled a prolonged illness, which reportedly worsened after his re-election in 2023. He was said to have received treatment in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and India, though the specific ailment was not publicly disclosed.
Political Career and Legislative Record
Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and secured a second term in 2023 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He became the only senator from Nasarawa North to win two consecutive terms since the creation of the state.
Before joining the National Assembly, he served multiple terms in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to become Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.
