
Former Minister of Labour and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chris Ngige, narrowly escaped an attack after armed men reportedly ambushed his convoy along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area.
According to his former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, the convoy was attacked by gunmen who opened fire on security personnel escorting the vehicle. A police officer attached to the team was shot, while the attackers also seized his rifle and uniform.
Police Recover Stolen SUV After Gun Battle
The assailants allegedly made away with a white Mercedes-Benz SUV belonging to the convoy. The vehicle was later recovered by police operatives after a high-speed chase and an exchange of gunfire.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said officers have launched a massive manhunt for the fleeing suspects. He added that one police officer sustained minor gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
Unconfirmed Casualties Emerge
Reports from Vanguard indicate that a woman who was recording the scene was allegedly shot dead during the attack. Another victim, a shop owner who stepped outside during the chaos, reportedly sustained serious injuries and is undergoing surgery. However, these casualty details remain unconfirmed as investigations are still ongoing.
Security Agencies Intensify Hunt for Attackers
Authorities have assured residents that security operatives are actively pursuing the suspects and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
