The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to introduce tighter regulations on TikTok and similar social media platforms, citing the need to encourage more educational and skill-driven content among Nigerian youths.

According to government officials, the initiative aims to redirect online creativity toward productive digital engagement, rather than what they describe as the “entertainment-focused trend” currently dominating the space.

Public Reaction: Nigerians Kick Against TikTok Regulation Proposal

The proposed regulation has sparked mixed reactions across social media. Many Nigerians criticized the move, arguing that the government should prioritize job creation and economic recovery instead of policing online entertainment.

One user commented:

“Here we go again. Instead of fixing unemployment or inflation, they want to regulate TikTok.”

Another wrote:

“How about teaching digital skills offline first before controlling what people post online?”

Some users jokingly added that the new rule could force creators to completely change their content style.

“Next thing you’ll see comedians teaching carpentry just to stay online,” one user quipped, sparking laughter and memes.

Supporters Welcome Move to Clean Up Content

While many condemned the proposal, a few Nigerians supported it, saying TikTok has become too unserious.

“That’s a good one. TikTok is now full of beggars and unserious content. It needs regulation,” a commenter said.

However, critics countered that most creators depend on entertainment content for income and visibility.

“Educative content doesn’t trend as much. People need entertainment to survive this economy,” another user wrote.

Despite differing opinions, most Nigerians agreed that TikTok remains a major source of income, exposure, and creativity for the country’s youth population.
