IMG 9456Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has weighed in on the heated debate rocking the Nigerian film industry over actors dancing on social media to promote their movies — and she’s not holding back.

The ongoing conversation has split opinions among top Nollywood stars, with filmmakers and actors publicly disagreeing on what qualifies as “professional” movie promotion.

“Who Made the Rules?” – Iyabo Ojo Questions Movie Promotion Critics

Taking to her Instagram page, Iyabo Ojo challenged critics who believe there should be a fixed standard for promoting films. According to the actress, there are no universal rules when it comes to marketing movies, and no one owes anyone an explanation for how they choose to promote their work.

She further suggested that jealousy and insecurity often fuel unnecessary criticism within the entertainment industry.

“2026 Isn’t for Talkers, It’s for Doers” – Iyabo Ojo Sends Strong Message

Encouraging her colleagues to stay focused, Iyabo Ojo urged actors and filmmakers to prioritize results over public opinions. She advised creatives to adopt strategies that work for them and allow others to succeed in their own way.

In her words:

“Who made the rules? Nobody you gotta answer to.

2026 ain’t for talkers — it’s for doers.

Do what works for YOU.

Let others win their way.

You win yours. Period.

The Return of Arinzo coming to a cinema near you soon.”

How the Movie Promotion Controversy Started

The debate intensified after renowned filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, speaking at the premiere of one of his films, stated that he was not interested in celebrating ₦1 billion or ₦2 billion box office figures if he personally couldn’t earn at least ₦10 million from the project.

He also openly criticized actors who dance on social media as part of movie promotions, sparking widespread reactions online.

Funke Akindele Responds to Kunle Afolayan

Reacting to his remarks, actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele made it clear that she is not responsible for anyone’s success or failure in the industry. She urged Kunle Afolayan not to allow jealousy influence his views, adding that the entertainment space is big enough for everyone to thrive.

Omotola Shares Her Take — Then Surprises Fans

Veteran actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde also joined the conversation, initially stating that she would never dance to promote her movies, describing the method as unprofessional. She emphasized that a good film should sell itself.

However, fans were later surprised when Omotola shared a video of herself dancing while promoting her highest-grossing movie — a move that sparked mixed reactions across social media.

As the debate continues, one thing remains clear: there’s no single formula for success in Nollywood, and actors are increasingly choosing strategies that work best for them — rules or no rules.
