Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has described the United States Christmas Day military airstrikes on Islamist militants in Sokoto State as a “blessing.”

Mrs Tinubu said the joint operation is proof that the Tinubu administration is open to deeper security cooperation with the United States in the fight against terrorism and banditry.

Tinubu declared emergency on insecurity — First Lady

Speaking with Fox News Digital, the First Lady revealed that President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency on insecurity on November 26, 2026, following growing global concern over Nigeria’s security situation.

50,000 new police, 24,000 soldiers, forest guards to be armed

According to her, the President approved major security measures, including:

  • Recruitment of 50,000 additional police officers
  • Deployment of 24,000 military officers
  • Arming 10,000 forest guards to secure forests where terrorists hide
  • Recalling 11,566 police officers previously assigned to VIP duties, and sending them to hot spots

She mentioned areas like Plateau, Benue, Taraba, and other communities facing insecurity.

“Nigeria respects freedom of religion”

Mrs Tinubu stressed that Nigeria is a nation built on religious freedom, which is protected by the constitution.

She also noted that tackling insecurity is important for both citizens’ safety and investor confidence, as economic growth continues to rise.

“We won’t blame past governments”

The First Lady added that the current administration is focused on solving inherited problems rather than blaming previous leaders, stressing the need for partnerships with countries that genuinely want Nigeria to succeed.
