Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington, popularly known as Akpi, has triggered widespread reactions online after releasing a controversial video in response to Nigeria’s disappointing outing at the Grammy Awards.

Nigerian Artists Leave Grammys Empty-Handed

At the 2026 Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles, South African singer Tyla clinched the Best African Music Performance award, defeating Nigerian heavyweights including Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Omah Lay, and Ayra Starr.

The outcome meant Nigeria recorded zero competitive Grammy wins, a result that left many Afrobeats fans frustrated, especially given the genre’s massive global influence.

Speed Darlington’s Viral Reaction

Reacting shortly after the ceremony, Speed Darlington shared a video recorded on the streets of New York City, where he openly mocked Nigerian artists over the loss.

In his usual satirical tone, he suggested that winning a Grammy has more to do with powerful industry connections than musical talent.

In his words:

“Oil Grammy o, oil Grammy. If you put am for nyash, you go win Grammy… Long face.”

The clip quickly went viral, drawing sharp attention for its sarcasm and provocative delivery.

Diddy Reference Fuels Controversy

Speed Darlington also referenced American music mogul Sean Combs, implying that Nigerian artists only secure Grammy wins when linked to influential U.S. figures.

Many interpreted the remark as a subtle jab at Burna Boy’s 2021 Grammy win, which followed his collaboration with Diddy on Twice As Tall. The reference stirred further controversy, especially in light of Diddy’s recent legal troubles.

Nigerians React: Truth or Disrespect?

Reactions online have been sharply divided.

  • Some users defended Speed Darlington, arguing that he was merely expressing a harsh reality in his trademark comedic style.
  • Others slammed him for disrespecting Nigerian artists who have played key roles in pushing Afrobeats onto the global stage.

Several fans also reignited debates about whether the Grammys truly understand or fairly represent African music, despite its worldwide popularity.

As discussions continue, Speed Darlington’s remarks have once again proven his ability to dominate conversations — whether for humor, controversy, or both.
