
Former Kaduna State Governor, , has been detained by the (EFCC) in Abuja after hours of interrogation linked to an alleged ₦432 billion corruption investigation.
El-Rufai reportedly arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, around 10am on Monday after honouring an official invitation from the anti-graft agency.
Probe Linked to Kaduna Assembly Report
Sources familiar with the matter said the investigation is connected to findings contained in the 2024 report of the .
The probe reportedly centres on allegations of loan mismanagement, breach of due process in contract awards, and claims that Kaduna State was left with a heavy debt burden during El-Rufai’s tenure as governor.
Phone Bugging Allegation Also Under Review
The former governor is also expected to respond to questions surrounding allegations that he authorised the bugging of the phone of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, , while in office.
EFCC: Investigation Ongoing for Over a Year
A senior EFCC source disclosed that El-Rufai has been under investigation for about one year before the invitation was extended.
According to the source, the commission typically completes substantial investigative work before questioning high-profile suspects.
“We don’t just rush to invite suspects. Persons accused are always the last, after investigations have reached an advanced stage,” the source said.
When asked whether El-Rufai would be released on Monday night, the official responded that he remained in custody and would not be released the same day.
EFCC Confirms Invitation, Keeps Details Close
EFCC spokesperson confirmed that the former governor honoured the invitation but declined to comment on the substance of the interrogation or possible next steps.

As of the time of filing this report, Nasir El-Rufai remains in EFCC custody, with investigations still ongoing.
