Suspected bandits have attacked Anwase village in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, torching at least 11 houses on Friday, February 7, 2026.
Although no deaths were recorded, several residents reportedly sustained minor injuries, while many villagers fled for safety.
Attack Happened Around Midday
Local sources said the attackers stormed the community around midday, sparking panic as residents ran for their lives.
“It happened so quickly,” one resident said. “We ran for our lives as the houses went up in flames. Thank God the security men were nearby.”
Security Forces Responded Quickly
The attack was contained after security operatives intervened, forcing the bandits to retreat.
The security team was reportedly already deployed in the area due to an earlier attack in Abande community, where six persons were killed, including a mobile police officer.
Community Living in Fear
A former councillor, Lawrence Akerigbe, said repeated attacks have left residents traumatised.
He recalled that Anwase has suffered previous violence, including a deadly raid on Christmas Day 2024, which reportedly left over 28 people dead.
Rising Killings in Kwande
Authorities warned that the pattern of attacks in Kwande LGA remains alarming, with reports indicating that at least 76 people have been killed in the area within the past two years.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant as security patrols are being intensified.
