Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has alleged that there are plans to brand him a Boko Haram terrorist as a pretext to target him.
Gumi made the claim while addressing members of his congregation in a video that has since circulated widely on social media.
“I Am Marked for Elimination” — Gumi
According to the cleric, the allegation was secretly conveyed to him by security sources. He said he became aware of the development after receiving an early-morning phone call from an unidentified contact in Abuja.
Gumi claimed the caller informed him that his name had surfaced during discussions at a national security meeting, where he was allegedly being portrayed as a terrorist figure.
“I received a call from a top official in Abuja informing me that I am among those marked by the U.S. for elimination through an American airstrike, as part of Boko Haram,” Gumi said.
“Northern leaders and clerics must speak up against these lies.”
Questions Terrorism Narrative
In his remarks, the cleric also questioned prevailing narratives around terrorism, arguing that the emergence of insurgent groups should not be blamed on local religious figures.
According to him, global powers play a significant role in the rise and persistence of terrorism.
“Even Americans said they came to fight terrorists, so who are the terrorists? They are the ones,” he stated.
