Police Suspend Enforcement of Tinted Glass Ban Nationwide After Court Order

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has suspended plans to enforce the ban on the use of tinted vehicle glass, which was earlier scheduled to take effect from January 2, 2026.

The suspension follows an interim court order issued on December 17, 2025, in suit number HOR/FHR/M/31/2025, restraining the Police from proceeding with the enforcement pending the hearing and determination of the substantive case.

Why the Enforcement Was Suspended

In a press statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the Police had on December 15, 2025, announced the resumption of enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy as part of efforts to enhance public safety and internal security.

However, after the announcement, the Police were formally served with an interim court order directing the Force to halt the enforcement.

According to Hundeyin, the Police, in line with constitutional provisions and respect for the rule of law, have:

  • Entered appearance in the case

  • Filed preliminary objections

  • Applied for the vacation of the interim court order

The court has adjourned the matter to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.

Official Police Position

Hundeyin stated:

“Accordingly, and strictly in compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold nationwide, pending the decision of the court.”

He added that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to upholding the rule of law while carrying out its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.

What This Means for Motorists

For now:

  • No nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass ban will commence on January 2, 2026

  • Motorists will not be penalised under the suspended policy until further notice

  • The situation remains subject to the court’s final ruling

Next Steps

The Police assured members of the public that:

  • Lawful and intelligence-driven policing strategies will continue nationwide

  • Further updates and clear guidance will be issued after the court delivers its decision

The NPF urged Nigerians to remain calm and law-abiding as the legal process runs its course, stressing that public order and national security remain its top priorities.
