The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has described the survival of world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua in a recent fatal road accident as an act of divine mercy.
Pastor Adeboye made the remark on Sunday during RCCG’s monthly thanksgiving service, while speaking on the theme of God’s mercy as a source of preservation and life.
“We Are Alive by God’s Mercy” — Adeboye
Quoting Lamentations 3:22–23, the cleric reminded worshippers that survival is not always a result of human effort or wisdom.
“It is by the mercies of the Lord that we are not consumed. We are alive today not because of cleverness, but because of God’s mercy,” Adeboye said.
Referencing Anthony Joshua’s accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, Pastor Adeboye noted that the boxer narrowly escaped death after reportedly exchanging seats with another passenger shortly before the crash occurred.
“I read in the newspapers yesterday that our boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, exchanged seats with someone before the accident. The people he exchanged seats with died. I don’t know why, but the mercy of God said someone must still be alive today,” he added.
Details of the Accident
The accident involved a Lexus SUV in which Joshua was travelling. The vehicle collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of two members of his team:
-
Sina Ghami – strength and conditioning coach
-
Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele – personal trainer
Joshua sustained minor injuries and has since been discharged from medical care.
