Former presidential candidate Dele Momodu has made a surprise political move that is already stirring conversations nationwide.

On Thursday, the Ovation publisher officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring his new political alignment in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

“This Is Not About Power” – Momodu Declares

Addressing supporters and associates, Momodu was quick to shut down speculation about personal ambition.

According to him, his decision to join the ADC is not about seeking political office, but about contributing meaningfully to the development and political direction of his people.

“People have asked me, what do you want? Do you want to be a governor, a senator? No. I just want to promote the best interests of our people,” he said.

An Emotional Homecoming After 50 Years

Momodu described his move as a deeply personal one, revealing that it took him over 50 years of hard work and careful planning to establish a firm home base in Iwe, his ancestral community.

He recounted how he built a home there from his modest income, stressing that no one can now question his roots or connection to his people.

“It took me over 50 years of excruciating hard work and meticulous planning to plant a home in Iwe. Today, nobody can say Dele has no roots in Iwe,” he stated.

Reintegrating Into Edo Politics

Momodu explained that joining the ADC marks his formal reintegration into the political process of Edo State, insisting that his involvement is driven by service, not self-interest.

“Today, I am standing before you, my friends, as I humbly reintegrate myself into the political process of my state,” he said.

Why This Move Matters

Momodu’s defection comes at a time when Nigeria’s opposition space is witnessing quiet realignments ahead of 2027, with several political heavyweights reassessing their platforms.

Although he insists he is not contesting for any office, political observers believe his entry into the ADC could:

  • Strengthen the party’s national profile
  • Attract disgruntled politicians and voters
  • Reshape political calculations in the South-West and South-South

The Big Question

If Dele Momodu is not seeking power, what exactly is he building?

For now, one thing is certain:

His move to the ADC has added fresh momentum to Nigeria’s shifting political landscape — and many will be watching closely to see what comes next.
