Allegations of Forgery, Procedural BreachesCall for Resolution Before Enforcement

Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over plans to commence implementation of Nigeria’s new Tax Reform Act from January 1, despite what he described as unresolved legal and political disputes surrounding the law.

Adeyanju faulted the decision to proceed, warning that outstanding allegations linked to the passage of the Act raise serious constitutional and governance concerns.

Allegations of Forgery, Procedural Breaches

In a statement, the lawyer described the enforcement of the tax law amid claims of forgery and legislative process violations as a direct threat to Nigeria’s legal framework.

According to him, moving ahead with implementation without first addressing the controversies undermines public confidence in democratic institutions and the rule of law.

He further referenced allegations that multiple versions of the Tax Reform Act are currently in circulation within government circles, a situation he said deepens concerns about transparency and due process.

Call for Resolution Before Enforcement

Adeyanju argued that any major fiscal reform, especially one with nationwide implications, must be backed by clarity, legality, and consensus, stressing that unresolved disputes could expose the policy to legal challenges.

He maintained that proceeding under such circumstances could set a dangerous precedent for governance and lawmaking in Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government has not issued a formal response to Adeyanju’s criticism.
