Seun Kuti, son of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has criticised ongoing comparisons between Afrobeats superstar Wizkid and his father, describing such claims as disrespectful to Fela’s legacy.
The musician made this known during a recent Instagram livestream, where he addressed Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, urging them to stop referring to the singer as a “new Fela.”
According to Seun Kuti, equating any contemporary artist with the Afrobeat pioneer undermines the historical importance and uniqueness of his father’s contribution to music, culture, and political activism.
He argued that Fela’s influence went beyond music and should not be reduced to fan debates or online comparisons.
“It is an insult to compare Wizkid to Fela,” Seun Kuti said. “Fela’s name should be kept out of these conversations. When people realised that the shoes were too big to fill, and some of us did not allow such narratives to stand, it became clear how disrespectful those comparisons are.”
Kuti further stated that while he understands defiance as a form of expression, he believes many of the comments made by overzealous fans stem from ignorance rather than informed appreciation.
He also warned that extreme fan rivalries are having a negative effect on the Nigerian music industry, noting that some artists now avoid collaborations due to hostile fan reactions online.
“Why must Fela always be dragged into petty discussions?” he asked. “Fan rivalries are hurting the industry. People should focus on enjoying their favourite artist’s music without unnecessary comparisons.”
Seun Kuti concluded by encouraging fans to appreciate artists for their individuality and creativity, rather than measuring them against cultural icons from a different era.
The comments have since sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many users debating the boundaries between admiration, comparison, and respect for musical legacies.
