The trial of 46-year-old Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the tragic road accident linked to heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, has been adjourned to February 25, 2026.

The case, which has continued to draw public attention due to its high-profile connection and tragic outcome, involves an accident that claimed the lives of two young men, described as close friends of the world-renowned boxer.

What Happened in Court

Kayode was first arraigned on January 2, 2026, before the Sagamu Magistrate Court, with Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun presiding.

During the latest sitting, the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that although four prosecution witnesses were listed, only three were present.

He subsequently applied for an adjournment, explaining that the prosecution needed time to duplicate the case file and forward it to the Ogun State Attorney-General’s Office, through the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP), for legal advice — a step he said was necessary in the interest of justice.

Defence Objects, Court Overrules

Counsel to the defendant, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the request, insisting that the defence was ready to proceed immediately and urging the court not to delay the trial.

However, after listening to arguments from both sides, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s application and adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026, for further hearing.

Charges Against the Lexus Driver

Adeniyi Kayode is facing a four-count charge, including:

  • Dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act
  • Reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1)
  • Driving without due care and attention, resulting in bodily harm and property damage, contrary to Section 7(1)
  • Driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the same Act

All charges are based on provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.

Why the Case Matters

The accident sparked widespread reactions after it emerged that the victims were close associates of Anthony Joshua, further amplifying public interest and calls for accountability.

As the legal process continues, many Nigerians are closely watching to see how the court will handle a case involving loss of life, alleged reckless driving, and a global sports figure indirectly connected to the tragedy.

All eyes are now on February 25, 2026, when the trial is expected to resume.
