Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for referring to him by his first name, describing the act as disrespectful.
Wike made the remarks on Monday while responding to questions during his monthly media parley in Abuja, amid ongoing political exchanges between both leaders.
“That Is My Father’s Name”
According to the FCT minister, it was improper for Makinde to address him simply as “Wike,” stressing that the name belongs to his father and should not be used in that manner.
“He has never called me Wike. That is my father’s name. He cannot do that. It is disrespectful,” Wike said.
He added that Makinde lacked the standing to address him in such a way, regardless of his position as a governor.
Background to the Dispute
Wike’s reaction followed claims by Makinde that the FCT minister had told President Bola Ahmed Tinubu he would “hold” the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for him ahead of the 2027 elections—an allegation Wike has repeatedly denied.
Wike insisted that Makinde misrepresented what transpired during the meeting in question and failed to mention other prominent figures who were present.
Questions Over Alleged Meeting
Challenging Makinde’s account, Wike questioned the narrative surrounding the meeting with President Tinubu.
“He didn’t mention the former governor of Benue. He didn’t mention the former governor of Abia. He didn’t mention the former governor of Enugu,” Wike said.
He explained that the meeting was not convened by the President but was requested by members of the group themselves.
“We said we wanted to see the President, and he agreed. We went to his house and told him we were still available and ready to work together,” Wike stated.
Escalating Political Tension
The exchange reflects deepening tensions within the PDP, particularly among influential figures who were once aligned politically.
Wike also took a swipe at Makinde’s past comments about personal wealth, insisting such remarks were unnecessary and disrespectful.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Makinde has not issued a fresh response to Wike’s latest comments.
