The Department of State Services (DSS) has taken into custody an Islamic cleric based in Osun State, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, after a video linked to a pro-Palestine demonstration circulated widely online.
Sheikh Molaasan, who leads the group Ta’awunu Muslimeen, was arrested after footage surfaced showing him and his followers calling for the liberation of Palestine. The video, which featured participants waving the Palestinian flag, quickly went viral and triggered public debate.
Security concerns were raised by some observers over the group’s activities, particularly as Ta’awunu Muslimeen has previously organised similar demonstrations in support of Palestine, including events dating back several years.
During the march in Iwo, participants were seen chanting religious slogans and pledging allegiance to Islamic teachings. Certain coordinated gestures in the footage drew criticism, with some commentators likening them to extremist symbolism.
The presence of children in the demonstration, reciting intense religious chants, further heightened concerns, especially against the backdrop of Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges related to religious radicalisation.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement detailing the specific charges or next steps.
