The brother of late Nollywood actress and filmmaker Allwell Ademola has sparked debate online after publicly criticising some Nigerian actors for what he described as sudden displays of affection following his sister’s death.
“Where Were You When She Needed Support?”
In a video trending on social media, the bereaved brother expressed frustration, questioning why several well-known actors who are now sharing emotional tributes allegedly failed to support Allwell Ademola while she was alive.
He claimed that despite her kindness and willingness to help others, many colleagues did not extend the same level of professional support to her career. He also questioned why she was reportedly not featured in major productions or given visibility when opportunities arose.
According to him, some individuals who benefited from her generosity—such as using their family home as a filming location—did not reciprocate when she needed backing.
His remarks framed the posthumous tributes as “performative,” urging colleagues to reflect on how they support one another while alive.
Iyabo Ojo Responds
Reacting to the video, actress Iyabo Ojo, who was reportedly mentioned, issued a response disputing the allegations.
Iyabo Ojo stated that she supported Allwell Ademola extensively during her lifetime, including featuring in her films without collecting payment and providing emotional and financial support as she built her career as a producer and director.
She added that her contributions were consistent and sincere, and offered prayers for the late filmmaker’s peaceful rest.
Public Reactions
The exchange has generated mixed reactions online. While some users echoed the brother’s call for genuine support within the industry, others supported Iyabo Ojo’s account, noting that contributions and assistance are not always publicised.
As of the time of filing, no other actors mentioned have issued formal responses. The conversation has reignited broader discussions about support systems, recognition, and solidarity within Nollywood, especially during times of personal struggle.
The family has continued to receive condolences, with burial arrangements expected to be announced in due course.
