The United States’ top defense official has said the Pentagon is preparing plans for possible action in Nigeria after President Donald Trump warned of military intervention over alleged attacks on Christians in the country. The comments mark a sharp escalation in U.S. rhetoric and have prompted strong rebuttals from Nigerian officials.

“Department of War is preparing for action,” says U.S. defence chief

Responding on X to Trump’s post, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the killing of innocent Christians “must end immediately” and that the U.S. military — referred to by the administration as the “Department of War” — was preparing for possible operations if Nigeria did not protect vulnerable communities. Hegseth’s comment echoed Trump’s call for urgent action.

Trump designates Nigeria a ‘country of particular concern’

On Friday, Trump posted that he was designating Nigeria a “country of particular concern” over what he described as large-scale violence against Christians, and said the U.S. could stop aid and “prepare for possible action” if the attacks continue. The declaration follows pressure from some U.S. lawmakers and advocacy groups calling for tougher measures.

Nigerian government rejects portrayal

The Federal Government of Nigeria has rejected characterisations that the violence amounts to targeted religious persecution, saying the security crisis affects Nigerians of all faiths and warning that sectarian framing risks inflaming tensions. Officials have pressed for diplomacy and the use of verified data in assessing the situation.

What could follow

A formal U.S. designation as a “country of particular concern” is used in U.S. policy to highlight severe violations of religious freedom and can precede measures such as aid restrictions or sanctions; however, any direct military action would involve additional legal and diplomatic steps and would be tightly constrained by international law and allied consultations. News agencies note the announcement significantly raises diplomatic stakes between Washington and Abuja.
