President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the withdrawal of police officers currently assigned to provide security for Very Important Persons (VIPs) across Nigeria.

The directive, announced in a statement by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, followed a high-level security meeting held on Sunday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Police Officers to Focus on Core Duties

According to the Presidency, police personnel previously attached to VIPs will now be redeployed to strengthen security operations nationwide and improve community policing.

VIPs still requiring escorts or protection will henceforth obtain armed security personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The decision comes amid growing concerns over the inadequate number of police officers available for public safety, especially in rural and high-risk communities.

30,000 New Police Recruits Approved

To further reinforce national security, President Tinubu has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers. The Federal Government is partnering with state governments to upgrade police training facilities across the country.

Security Chiefs Attend Emergency Meeting

The emergency meeting was attended by:

  • Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu – Chief of Army Staff

  • Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke – Chief of Air Staff

  • Kayode Egbetokun – Inspector General of Police

  • Tosin Adeola Ajayi – Director-General, Department of State Services

The President emphasized the need to boost police visibility and effectiveness as Nigeria continues to face rising security threats in several regions.
